Course Description

A zine (abbr. from fanzine) is typically a very low cost or free self-produced/ DIY publication that also typically has a small distribution (sometimes even less than 100!). Zines have been used throughout its own history within various subcultures and marginalized groups to build community and to share ideas within their communities. Usually taking on the form of some sort of small booklet or pamphlet, zines are accessible vehicles for artistic self-expression as well as to share ideas on politics, identity, and more.

In this 2-day zine workshop we will be introduced to a brief history on the origins of zines before delving into several exercises and prompts for collaboration and creation. We’ll cover multiple methods for making zines alongside each other as artists, and come away from the workshop with multiple zines of our own as well as knowledge of resources to continue onwards with this art form.

Artists in this course will:

  • Participate in a class size of 12 artists max

  • Meet for 2 days for three hours in our studio in Chelsea, NYC

  • Learn about this history of zines and their impact on communities and cultural movements

  • Learn a variety of zine making techniques

  • Engage in a variety of exploratory and collaborative exercises

  • Leave the workshop with multiple zines

  • Learn about resources to continue the practice beyond the workshop
